University of Miami

University of Miami:

Name: Pranav Sriraman
Year: Spring 2022
Majors: Biochemistry (Nutrition Track), Psychology, Economics
Minors: Chemistry, Health Sector Management

Hi, my name is Pranav Sriraman. I am a Biochemistry, Economics and Psychology triple major with minors in Chemistry and Health Sector Management. I am currently on the premed track and recently founded my startup- NutriEAT. At the U, I am a Consulting Analyst at TAMID Miami Chapter, a student-led consulting and finance club. Here are a few key points which I believe make The University of Miami the most underrated college of the country:

Perfect for the clueless Miami has 9 undergraduate school hosting over 250 majors and minors. In addition, as a part of the curriculum, students are required to take 3 courses in STEM, People and Society and Arts and Humanities each called a cognate. Once you declare your major/minors, certain cognates will automatically be filled up. Foote Fellows (honour students) are exempted from this requirement. This allows all students to chose from a multitude of classes and really explore what is out there for them. Personally, I applied for biology, fall semester 1 i was biomedical engineering, switched to exercise physiology and math, and then finally settled at economics, biochemistry and psychology. You’ll see students double major in marine biology and marketing, to political science and chinese. The freedom to chose classes that YOU want to study is quite rare at other Universities.

In addition, UM gets great funding annually for research. Majority of the faculty, undergraduate and medical school, welcome undergraduates to their lab- including freshman. With the diversity of labs offered as well, students interested in research are bound to find something they are passionate in and getting published is quick to follow! People, Diversity, Scholarships, Financial Aid UM is incredibly diverse hosting students from all over the world, from different socioeconomic backgrounds. Even though the social scene at Miami is heavy, majority of the students are dedicated to their schoolwork. Students at UM enjoy a good work:life ratio. Increases in recent funding has allowed UM to be generous with their scholarships and financial aid to students. Arriving on campus, I was shocked to know that majority of my dorm floor was on scholarship/financial aid. If you’re looking at graduate or professional school, save money! It’s MIAMI

Babson College

Babson College:

Name: Vishal Reddy
Year: 2023
Major: Technology Entrepreneurship
Contact: vnarapareddy1@babson.edu

Hi, I am Vishal. I am currently a freshman at Babson College. I plan on majoring in Technology Entrepreneurship and I am part of the Family Entrepreneurship Club at Babson. Here are some things about Babson:

  1. As many of you must have heard already, Babson is a small business school that specializes in Entrepreneurship. In terms of ranking, Babson has been rated as the number one college, even higher than MIT, for its Entrepreneurship program for the past 20 years. So if you really want to do Entrepreneurship, Babson is the place to be.
  2. The best part about the academics at Babson is that it is a small school. The average classroom size is only about 20-30 students. This is very similar to the classroom environment at TISB as students can approach professors at any point of time. While most colleges have classes with hundreds of students, Babson has small classrooms with interactive sessions which allows for all students to participate. Students receive much closer attention when compared to larger schools in the US.
  3. The faculty is very passionate about teaching and sharing their knowledge. A lot of the professors started their own businesses at some point and have had the experience of being entrepreneurs. Every professor also has office hours where you can go speak with them regarding any queries and doubts. This is all done one on one and helps maintain a good relationship with professors. They’re usually flexible and willing to help at all times.
  • At Babson, there are tons of business and other clubs for one to participate in. Since Babson is so focused on networking, there are multiple events, organizations that give you the opportunity to start networking right from day 1. There are days where top firms come in to recruit Babson students and this provides an opportunity for even first years to just interact with firms and find potential internship opportunities.
  • Babson is located about 30 minutes from Boston in a town called Wellesley. The campus is peaceful, calm, and filled with greenery. However, there isn’t much to in Wellesley or the campus so students usually go to Boston every weekend. Boston is a very lively city with clubs, bars, restaurants, and a lot more. The party nights for Babson students are Thursdays and Saturdays and students usually go to the city on these days.
  • Babson allows its students to cross register and take classes at Olin School. Olin is an extremely small and extremely competitive engineering school. So if you’re interested in computer science and in the field of technology, you can always explore more by taking classes at Olin. Apart from Babson, Boston has the cream of educational institutions such as Harvard, MIT, and Wellesley College. Babson being in close proximity allows students to attend events and parties at those schools. This is a great way for students to network and party with students who attend the best schools. You could even take some courses during the weekend at MIT and Harvard. This gives you the opportunity to learn from the best and build contacts which can be very useful in the future.
  • Programs and courses such as FME and CLTP are very unique to Babson. They provide a lot of knowledge and experience. I suggest you guys to search them up in order to understand more about them.
  • Finally I want to highlight the diversity that is unique to Babson. With nearly 30% international students who come from all over the world, attending Babson provides you the opportunity to learn about people who come from diverse backgrounds. With such diversity, you will never feel like an international student and this makes transition into college much easier and faster. You will never have a problem making friends and building a group.
  • Lastly, I want to talk about the drawback of Babson being an expensive school. Although it is a private school that offers top class education, it is away from the city and still happens to be about $70,000 for tuition, housing, and meals. While I never applied for aid, Babson claims that it offers some sort of financial aid to nearly 50% of its students. So tuition shouldn’t be a barrier for you as I know a lot of people who received financial aid.

That’s it from me and I hope you consider Babson when making your decision. I want to appreciate Shaila for doing this as none of us had such a helpful program when making our decision. Feel free to reach out as I will be happy to answer any questions related to Babson.

Brandeis University

Hi I’m Jahnavi. I’m a first year at Brandeis University. One of the things I like most about Brandeis is its location offers the best of both worlds. Located in Waltham, MA, Brandeis has a college campus environment with a medium sized class (about 900 freshmen). But, it is also only a 25-minute bus ride away from Boston and Cambridge. Brandeis provides a free shuttle service to Harvard and Boston 4 days a week. This makes it very convenient for students to access museums, entertainment, food and events at the dozens of colleges in the Boston area. It is also part of a consortium which allows students to cross-register in classes at universities such as Tufts, Boston College and Boston University.

The most popular department and majors are within the pre-health fields. These students often volunteer in the Waltham branch of the Boston Children’s hospital, but there are other volunteer opportunities in Waltham including groups like ‘Hospital helpers’ and ‘Family Van.’ Boston is a leading center in medical care and technology across the States, and top companies and hospitals offer work experience to students in the area.

One of the main reasons I chose Brandeis is because it is a combination of a liberal arts college and a research university. Science professors are very focused on their research and often incorporate their lab work into lectures. However, a focus on liberal arts pushes students to broaden their education with requirements in arts and humanities as well. As someone interested in taking classes in diverging fields this was appealing to me.

Finally, Brandeis was founded in 1948 with a mission of providing an equal education to all, particularly the Jewish community. It has been determined to maintain diversity and awareness to other cultures in the student population. People I met throughout my first year were welcoming, and helpful rather than cut-throat or competitive. The variety of clubs and small-scale events can help you meet new people and find a community that suits you.

Good luck for your college selection and congratulations!

Jahnavi

Jindal Global Law School

Jindal Global Law School:

Name: Srishti Magdum
Year: TISB 2019 (Freshman)
Major: Law
Contact: srishtimagdum@gmail.com

Hi, I’m Srishti Magdum, and am currently pursuing my law degree at  the Jindal Global Law School at O.P. Jindal Global University in India. The university much like other Indian universities has around 4000 students on campus pursuing various degrees ranging from liberal arts to business. Out of all the courses, Jindal is most reputed for it’s law school. The law school has also been ranked India’s best law school, securing the 1st position over schools such as NLS Bangalore, etc. If you’re looking at pursuing law, Jindal is a school you should definitely look into. The reasons I chose Jindal are:

The faculty: The professors at the Law school are all top notch, many of which are practising lawyers whose experience and knowledge can prove highly beneficial for us as students. Majority of the professors have degrees from Ivy League or Russel Group universities which ensures the quality of education. They make sure to use interactive methods to make class more fun as it can sometimes get quite dense in terms of reading. The faculty is the major factor that sets Jindal apart from most of the other institutions in the country.

Resources: The library is enormous and has books on any subject or topic available. As law students, the course has a large amount of reading and hence, we have access to a large number of websites and platforms to make learning easier.

Campus: The university is situated in Sonipat, 30 kms from Delhi. It is a small town and hence there is not much to do around the university unless you wish to travel to Delhi which is about a 2 hour journey. Very honestly, it can get quite monotonous at times. But the facilities available to students on campus are incredible with a foodcourt with multiple chains of restaurants, all sports facilities ranging from football till volleyball, a student recreation lounge and a gymnasium as well.

Internships: There are a large number of internship opportunities available from time to time, a student is encouraged to do at least one internship over the course of one academic session. The placements at the end of 5 years are remarkable and almost every student graduating ends up with a job.

Social life: If you’re an IB student, you can find it to be a little challenging to fit in in the beginning but there are a large number of clubs, events and activities going on on campus which will enable you to meet like minded people eventually.

Another major plus point about the university is the ties with universities abroad. They have multiple exchange programmes with universities such as UPenn, Harvard, etc. and also has opportunities to study a semester abroad in your time at the school which can be an amazing opportunity given that you will be doing your degree in India. This was one of the deciding factor in why I chose Jindal.

Good luck and please feel free to contact me incase you want more details regarding the same.

University of Wisconsin-Madison

UW Madison:

Name: Anvit
Year: Freshman
Major: Computer science
Contact info: +16085125030 (Whatsapp)

Hi, I’m Anvit and I’m currently a freshman at UW-Madison studying computer science. As UW-Madison is a large public school, your classes are generally pretty large. While the size of the school may scare you, it also means that your experience at Madison will be what you make it out to be. For example, you will have a lot of freedom over which classes you take and which clubs you join—there’s even a cheese-eating club (Wisconsin is known as the cheese state after all).

Classes are academically rigorous, but resources provided by your TAs and professors outside lectures are extremely helpful. There are ample opportunities to have fun either at parties or on game days—when the campus bursts with school spirit. Not to mention, Madison is a nice, lively city. It isn’t too large like a lot of the metropolitan cities here, but it is not completely isolated either. We have State Street really close to campus, which has everything a regular college student needs, from coffee shops to restaurants to a bookstore. In addition, Chicago is a short bus ride away if you want a taste of a big city. However, just beware it does get really cold here, especially during the winter months, so make sure you’re prepared for that. All in all, I really enjoyed the people I met and my time here on campus and believe UW-Madison was the right decision for me.

Purdue University

Purdue University:

Name: Keshav Agarwal
Year: Freshman (class of 2023)
Major: Aero and astro engineering
Contact Information: +18728010038

Hi everyone I am Keshav, currently a freshman in Purdue University. I plan to major in aeronautical and astronautical engineering. Purdue’s famous for being the alma mater of Neil Armstrong, but there is much more to it than that. These are some things that stand out:

Traditions and culture: Purdue is over 150 years old, and has a number of interesting traditions. My favorite is the fountain run. Students, faculty and alumni all participate in running through the five beautiful fountains as it is known to be part of the Boilermaker Experience. Our rivalry with Indian University is one of the fiercest rivalries in the US, and it makes watching sporting events so much more fun. On any given day you will come across at least one group of students shouting “IU sucks.” I love the “Hail Purdue” song, which is heartwarming and inspiring.

The campus: Purdue is a located in a college town, with around 40,000 students. This makes for a lively atmosphere in and around Purdue. The campus is huge, and almost majestic some might say. It looks absolutely stunning all year around. However, West Layayette is a small town, and hence we do not have the “city life” a lot of you may prefer. However, it does have a number of things colleges in big cities don’t. You can get hammocks and just sit outside and read all day, play catch with your friends or skateboard around campus. We have a number of cafes and fast food joints very close to campus. When walking across Memorial Mall, called the Hello Walk, there are plaques instructing passersby to “smile and say hello to everyone you meet.”

The Co-Rec: This is Purdue’s recreational facility, and its one of the best in the country. It has 5 floors and is equipped for almost anything, from gym equipment to squash courts to an indoor soccer field to an Olympic swimming pool. It offers several interesting activities like rock and wall climbing, karate classes and intramural sports. It is probably my favorite thing in Purdue, and you don’t have to be a gym freak or a sports enthusiast to appreciate it. Its vastness ensures that every student can find something that interests them.

Social Life: Greek life is quite big at Purdue if you’re into that. It is definitely something worth experiencing. There are more than 80 fraternities and sororities on campus. However, Purdue is definitely not a party school if any of you are looking for that.

The airport: Yes, Purdue even has its own airport. Purdue offers a number of aviation courses, and a large number of students are certified pilots. Anybody can visit the airport too!

Resources: Purdue, being a STEM focused school, has excellent resources on campus. We even have our very own nuclear reactor, which is very cool. We have excellent libraries, and all of it is online too, and can be easily accessed by Purdue students. Purdue’s a very technology oriented college. It is home to three of the worlds top supercomputers. Another thing I love about Purdue is how easy it is to get any form of help, be it academic, cultural or social. There are so many opportunities for you.

Sports: We have an amazing basketball team. The Mackey Arena for Basketball and the Ross Ade stadium for football are top notch stadiums located on campus.

School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC)

SAIC:

Name: Devishi Seth
Year: Freshman
Major: Visual Arts (painting and sculpture)

Hi! My name is Devishi and I’m a freshman at School of the Art Institute of Chicago. I am currently in the painting and sculpture department. The key thing about SAIC is that it is an interdisciplinary art school. That means you do not need to have a major. As an art student, you can be really confused as to what you want to do after college and SAIC really helps with that. You can take classes in any department but if you want you can have a more focused area. I have previously taken two introduction classes and have learned a lot. All the faculty members are full-time artists so it is a whole different experience because there is so much you can learn from their life experiences. Being a student at SAIC you have free access to one of the world’s biggest art museums. This really allows you to further understand and analyze art. SAIC doesn’t have a campus as it is situated in downtown but there are many clubs and events happening that make up for the closeness you feel in a campus college. The facilities offered at SAIC are amazing. They have as many art courses you can think of and there’s a lot of crazy things always happening.
